The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) has launched the Maryland Solar Access Program under the Brighter Tomorrow Act of 2024, offering significant incentives to make solar energy more accessible to low and moderate-income households. This new initiative aims to reduce energy bills and promote sustainable energy solutions across the state.
Key Highlights of the Maryland Solar Access Program
Generous Incentives: The program provides up to $7,500 per eligible household, calculated at $750 per kilowatt of direct current (DC) solar capacity installed. This incentive is designed to help Maryland residents offset the cost of installing solar panels, making solar energy a viable option for more families.
First-Come, First-Served Basis: Grants will be allocated to eligible applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. Both purchased and third-party owned solar systems qualify for these incentives. This ensures a wide range of participation and accessibilityโ.
Transition from Previous Programs: The Solar Access program will replace the long-running Residential Clean Energy Rebate Program, which will conclude its final phase between July 1 and November 30, or until its funds are exhausted. This transition signifies a broader scope and enhanced benefits for Maryland residents.
Streamlined Permitting with SolarAPP+: In addition to financial incentives, the Brighter Tomorrow Act includes the adoption of Solar Automated Permit Processing Plus (SolarAPP+), a digital tool developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This tool simplifies the permitting process, reducing installation costs and speeding up project deployment. Local governments will receive grant funding to implement this technology, further easing the pathway to solar energy for residents.
Commitment to Clean Energy Goals: The Maryland Solar Access Program aligns with the state’s ambitious energy and climate goals under the Climate Solutions Now Act. By increasing the adoption of solar energy, the program supports Governor Wes Moore’s target of achieving 100% clean energy by 2035.
