Residential Clean Energy Credit
One of the most significant financial benefits available to Delaware homeowners is the Residential Clean Energy Credit. This federal incentive allows you to claim 30% of your total solar system cost, including equipment and installation, when you file your federal taxes for the year.
To qualify, homeowners must reside int he home (not be the landlord) and the solar energy system must be fully purchased, either upfront or through a solar loan (leased systems are not eligible). Homeowners must submit IRS Form 5695 when filing their federal taxes. This credit can also be used for the purchase and professional installation of an EV charger or solar battery, both services provided by SunnyMac. SunnyMac’s solar experts provide personalized guidance on how to claim this credit, ensuring you have the right documentation ready at tax time.

Green Energy Grant
Delaware’s Green Energy Grant Program helps residents reduce the upfront cost of installing solar panels and equipment by providing direct rebates to eligible homeowners. It’s only available for Delmarva Power or Delaware Electric Cooperative. Homeowners who are customers of these utility companies have the option of receiving SRECs or applying for the Green Energy Grant. This applies to both Delmarva Power and Delaware Electric Cooperative (DEC) customers. SunnyMac is happy to answer any questions you may have when determining the best option between the two. Just call us at 1-844-SUNNYMAC.
Delaware SRECs
Delaware homeowners can generate additional income through Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs). Every time your solar system produces 1,000 killowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, you earn one SREC, which you can then sell for profit. Brokers are available to handle this for you.
Delaware SRECs are available to residents across New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties, making it possible to turn your clean energy into extra cash.
Program highlights:
- Open to residential solar system owners. You must purchase your system (rather than a PPA/lease). There are many benefits to a PPA agreement as well, and a SunnyMac Solar and Roofing Advisor can explain the differences. Simply call 1-844-SUNNYMAC today!
- Market rates determine SREC value, creating a potential long-term revenue stream.
- No enrollment fee for many participating aggregator programs.
SunnyMac assists you in registering your system for SREC eligibility, so you can start earning as soon as your solar panels are producing power.

Net Metering
Another powerful incentive for Delaware homeowners is net metering. Utility companies are required to offer this program, which sipmly allows you to earn credits on your utility bill for any extra energy your solar system generates and sends back to the grid.
All major utility companies in Delaware participate, including:
- Delmarva Power
- Delaware Electric Cooperative
- Municipal electric utilities (e.g., City of Newark, City of Milford)
Key program features:
- No system size limit under Delaware’s regulations
- Excess credits roll over year after year, providing even greater long-term savings
At SunnyMac, we design your solar system to maximize your net metering benefits, and we walk you through setting up your utility billing to ensure you take full advantage. Learn more about net metering.
